When owner, Barry Barr, Started his company KAVU in 1992, He had created a very unique line of headwear using a very durable duck cotton (now called Force 10 cotton) He gave these caps a nice treatment by adding very colorful tubular webbing as a cool, outdoorsy accent. These hats are still in the KAVU catalog to this day as well as the addition of Strap visor collection.
He took his company to the Outdoor Retailer trade show in Reno, NV and set up the very first KAVU booth. It was a small booth tucked away in the back of the auditorium floor. Barry employed a very smart marketing move during the four days - Go With The Flow's buyers were at this particular show visiting vendors and doing business. Around lunch time of the first day of the show, I spotted Olympic slalom kayaker, Scott Shipley walking down the show aisles. Low and behold, Scott was wearing on of Barry's new hat creation and it looked solid!
After that, more and more high profile athletes, Cathy and Davey Hearn (olympic athletes) were rep'n the hats too. I can't remember what other high profile Industry people had been given hats but by day four, one couldn't walk though the trade show floor aisles with out seeing these really cool hats on industry notables and other athletes (see - KAVU "Strap Cap"images at the following link) http://www.kavu.com/Product/110/Strapcap.aspx
With that many mavens and influencers (pre Social Media) proudly wearing these new hats & product, his small KAVU booth was flowing in/out with people with wallets in hand to get these limited hats. Everyone was asking where they could get one! After the trade show Barry headed back to the Seattle HG and soon expanded his product selection to include soft goods like T-shirts, other type of new hats, apparel, stickers, etc, Fast forward to 2002. Barry and his team entered into the accessories business that included products like wallets, watch straps, clutches, purses and most significantly, his "opus" the original KAVU Rope Bag!!
This was the tipping point and from that product alone, his sales and success went through the roof! Here at Go With The Flow, of all of the products that we sell in-store & on-line, the KAVU Rope bag (as well as another spinoff called Rope Sling) see link http://www.kavu.com/Product/100/Strapvisor.aspx The KAVU Rope Bag is the #1 selling single item that is sold by our buiness! with the exception of Go With The Flow coin stickers and Go with the Flow "Bubble" stickers. GWTF sells thousands of Rope Bags & Rope Slings each year from out location in Roswell, Georgia. The bag is immensely popular with women of all ages and especially the 8 thru 21 year old buyer. But Moms like them too because they are young and sporty. Plus they do an alright job with nursing mommas and hold all of their bottles, pumps, and swadling blankets.
Besides the well thought design, bomber construction, durability, and multiple use features, it's the unique colors and patterns that drive this product year after year. THe design team at KAVU always comes out with new, exciting colors each season. Rarely do the re-introduce a colorway | design patterns more than once. They also introduce "Limited Edition" twice a year in Summer & Fall to further keep the line exclusive and fresh. The KAVU rope bag has become a "cult classic" and certainly a landmark product in both outdoors & in-town casual wear. In fact, many high schools in Georgia, it is on the "Back to School" supplies list because they fit into lockers so well.
The bags are built to last and defects/warranties/returns are rarely an issue at all. These bags are so solid and can stand up to worst punishment and they wear like iron! Also, because they are of cotton construction, the Rope Bag is easily machine washable. It truly is the perfect shoulder bag for travel, music festivals, camp, school, walking, hiking or just keeping all of your stuff organized together.
